A nice family picnic up in the mountains

Usually for Sunday dinners we all gather at my parent's house. Everyone brings a dish for the meal and we enjoy Sunday dinner together. Today we decided to mix it up a bit. We went up Millcreek Canyon and had a picnic in the mountains next to the creek. It was so much fun and so refreshing! Everyone got a little dirty, and had a LOT of fun. It worked out great with everyone bringing their dish up the mountain instead of to my parent's house. After about 2 hours of enjoying the nice refreshing mountain air we headed back to reality with tired kids that were ready for bed. Here are some cute pictures we got while we were up there.

Weekly Review - July 5-11

Sunday, July 5 - After our crazy July 4th adventures we all needed a break. Apparently even my camera needed a break because I forgot to get it out and take any pictures.

Monday, July 6 - Before heading back home from staying at my parent's house for the 4th of July weekend my kids helped my mom make each of them a tiny cream pie with pudding.

Tuesday, July 7 - Kaylee and Gabby started their Summer Camp program at school. They got to be detectives and solve mysteries this week. Gabby's class made trail mix in the kitchen and an "I Spy" bottle, and Kaylee's class did an I spy worksheet and followed clues to solve a mystery.

Wednesday, July 8 - We spent a nice pajama day at home to get things done...if only I weren't so exhausted. Kaylee gave herself a "make-over" with almost all the bows in the hair drawer.

Thursday, July 9 - The girls had summer program again. They finished up learning about detectives. Kaylee's class got to dust for fingerprints, and make trail mix in the kitchen. Gabby's class Followed clues to solve a mystery, and made a book about how they can use their different senses to help them figure things out.

Friday, July 10 - We went to the This is The Place Heritage Park for their Family Fun day to celebrate pioneer day coming up on July 24th. We did Arts, Crafts, Games, rode the train and more!

Saturday, July 11 - Marla and I had a yard sale to get rid of a ton of my junk. Kaylee has been BEGGING to have a lemonade stand for at least all of last summer and this summer. We helped her set up a lemonade stand at our yard sale and she was beyond thrilled!!! It only last ed about 30-45 minutes and then the novelty of it wore off. She did end up with some money in her pocket and it burned a hole in her pocket pretty quick. She bought an orange and a bag of Popsicles.

This is the Place Heritage Park

On Friday Wendy and I took our kids to This is the Place Heritage Park for their Family Fun Day celebrating Pioneer day coming up on the 24th of July. We had this great plan of getting there right at 9:00 when it opened but it took me longer to get out of my house than we had planned (which is kinda funny because usually it's Wendy that has a hard time getting out of the house on time and she was actually ready this time). We ended up pulling into the parking lot at 9:30 and the sign said that the family fun day didn't start until 10:00. After getting parked and walking over to the pioneer village everything was getting going. They had TONS of stuff set up for it. There were arts and crafts, pioneer games, horse rides, train rides, and lots more.

We started with almost all of the arts and crafts that they had set up:

Then on the short horse ride (just a ride up the lane and back with someone walking alongside the horse):

We went on the train ride around the park, ate Popsicles(extremely needed in the hot heat), and headed for home with some exhausted kids.

It wasn't too crowded and we had fun (except a couple of grumpy people), as we were leaving mobs of people were still getting there and we were so happy that we were on our way out.

Weekly Review - June 28-July 4

Sunday, June 28 - I love summer produce, and BBQs. We had Shish Kabobs for dinner with all sorts of summer produce. Everyone got to make their own, even Kaylee and Gabby. They made Fruit Kabobs.
Monday, June 29 - I went downtown with Wendy to play in the fountains at the Gateway. Kaylee decided it would be a lot more fun to just stay with Grandma at her house. So, Gabby went with me, and Kaylee went Grocery shopping and helped my mom clean her house. They both had fun, so it was a win-win for everyone.
Tuesday, June 30 - We went to Wendy's house and I took him the birthday present from my parents that had just gotten there from ordering it online. The kids had fun playing with his new car swing. Then Wendy, Marla, and I went out for my birthday. We had dinner at California Pizza Kitchen, and then went and saw The Proposal.
Wednesday, July 1 - My parents have been helping give tours at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House. Kaylee, Gabby, and I took my mom up there since my dad was already out there. The kids really like this bench that is across the street from the temple (They were looking at the temple).
Thursday, July 2 - Kaylee after her bath getting ready for the day.
Friday, July 3 - We went to the Provo Balloon Festival. It was fun watching them fill the balloons, launch them, and play some balloon games. We also went to the Freedom Festival and then that night we went and saw the "Balloon Movie" at the drive-through (a.k.a Disney/Pixar's "UP").
Saturday, July 4 - Happy Independence Day!! We had a family BBQ, went to a parade, and put on a fireworks show.

Happy Independence Day!

Yesterday was another fun filled day...but it was really missing something. I was missing Paul BIG TIME. I think the 4th of July is my favorite holiday, but part of the reason it's my favorite is because of Paul. First of all he's a big time pyro and LOVES, LOVES, Loves fireworks, secondly he's big time into BBQ and cooking and loves to put on an excellent BBQ, and third because he is the sexiest sailor in the US Navy and loves his country so much that he is willing to defend our freedom. Paul is the most amazing sailor, father, husband, and just all around the best guys ever! He has been gone for other holidays before and it wasn't so bad. But, this is Paul's holiday!!! Everything about the forth of July reminds me of Paul (well, except Parades because he doesn't enjoy them, but I love them!).

So, besides missing Paul here's the things we did for the Forth of July. We had our family BBQ at Wendy and Spencer's house. It was complete with Family (except Paul), Watermelon, and Potato Salad. After the BBQ we went to the Sandy City celebration. They have their parade in the evening (which I think is a brilliant idea) leading up to the fireworks. I love 4th of July parades! Before the parade Wendy and I took the kids over to the inflatables area and let them play for a few minutes. Then we went and sat down ready for the parade to begin. We sat on the curb and ate cotton candy, and collected candy that people in the parade were throwing, and enjoyed the entertainment.

After the parade was over we headed out to my parent's house for a family fireworks show. This is the part that is usually Paul's specialty...but without Paul there Marla, Spencer, and Israel put on a pretty good fireworks display. Also, my parent's neighbors have a HUGE show every year with a trailer full of fireworks (like thousands of dollars worth probably). So, it was a pretty good show.

Provo Freedom Festival

After the Balloon festival we went back to my house for a little while and then went over to the Freedom Festival in Provo. There was a car show (a very small car show, but it was pretty cool), Lots and lots of vendor booths, inflatables for the kids to play on, a reptile show with a snake and turtle that the kids could touch, performers, and a craft area (that we didn't go to because the kids were so tired from getting up so early). Here are a few highlight pictures from our morning.

Provo Freedom Days Balloon Festival

This morning we got up WAY early to go to the Freedom Days Balloon Festival in Provo. We got there at 6:30 and watched one of the balloons inflating. Every time they would make the burners blow the girls would take a step back. We watched it stand up and then we went over by the Tony the Tiger Balloon and watched it launch.
Here's Gabby's face while she was watching the balloons launch and float over us.
After the balloons launched they were playing a few balloon games. The first was "the hare and the hounds", the flag balloon was the hare and launched before all the other balloons, then the balloons had to try to catch him. Next they had to come back toward the field and drop a beanbag on a target to see which balloon could hit closest to the target. There were also some helium balloons that they were trying to pop with a jousting stick. Only a few of the balloons made it back to the field to try to hit the target. Most of the balloons got stuck since there was no breeze and not much airflow. So, they all got stuck in the Provo canyon currents and couldn't really go anywhere.

Wendy, Marla, Kaylee, and Roman watching the balloons. Kaylee is waving at one of the balloons that is coming over to the field to drop a beanbag on the target.
